Previously part of the University Wales, Aberystwyth became independent in 2007. Prior to this, it had been a college and founder member of the University of Wales since the late 19th Century.

The university is made up of six Institutes:

  • Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences
  • Business and Law
  • Professional Development
  • Geography, History, Politics and Psychology
  • Arts and Humanities
  • Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science

In the 2016 National Student Survey, it was ranked the top university in Wales for overall student satisfaction. It was also ranked in the top 40 universities in the uk by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2016-17.
