Founded in 1495, the University of Aberdeen is the UK’s fifth oldest university and third oldest in Scotland. The university has around 14,000 students in total, with around three quarters of these being undergraduates. The university is divided into three colleges, which are also divided into academic schools and other institutions. Subjects that are particular strengths include medical and life sciences, psychology, languages, geosciences and engineering.

A 2015-2020 strategic plan for the university states that it aims to be one of the top research-intensive universities in the country, with research being a predominant feature of the plan and its overall positioning.
